The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation launched in 2014 and 2015 as a corroboration between the Manly West School community and the P&C. Filled with natives, fruits and vegetables, children’s artwork, and informative labelling everywhere, it is a beautiful backdrop to our children’s school days.
Volunteers Needed
The Kitchen Garden relies on volunteers to keep it thriving. Suz is the school’s Kitchen Garden coordinator and would always be grateful for more helping hands; make it a family event! Please contact the school to be put in touch with Suz if you are able to help:

The Program
The Kitchen Garden is an outdoor classroom for teachers and students from K-6 for cross curricula lessons in science, visual arts, and mathematics, as well as being a tool for teaching sustainability and environmental education.
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program currently runs as part of the school day with Year 3 in semester one.
The students in this program learn all aspects of growing an edible organic garden, including the importance of soil quality, beneficial insects and companion planting. They learn how to build and maintain a compost and worm farm, grow vegetables and other plants from seeds and cuttings, and maintain garden beds. They also learn how to grow vegetables seasonally, harvest produce and to help prepare and taste the food.
